Asafoetida Powder
ASAFOETIDA POWDER
AKA "Devil's Dung" or "Hing" or "Ferula asafoetida" is a smelly and bitter root resin that is most commonly known for its use as a replacement for onions and garlic in Indian cuisine. In folk magic, however, it is used in works of protection, reversing, revenge, and jinxing. It is often worn on the person, in a mojo bag or just as a chunk of resin on a string, to keep off bad health and pests like fleas, ticks, and meddlesome people.
Note that asafoetida resin is so hard and pungent it is usually cut with something else when presented in a powdered form. Additions frequently include wheat or rice flour and/or ground fenugreek, turmeric, and gum arabic. If you see it in its bright yellow form, then it has been cut with turmeric, among other things. If you see it in its peach/tan form, then it is most likely only cut with wheat or rice flour and and an anti-caking agent like gum arabic.
